AI Workshop at AUA

Exploring the Future of Education: AUA Hosts AI Workshop

31.07.2024

YEREVAN, Armenia — On July 17, the American University of Armenia (AUA) hosted a workshop titled “Exploring Artificial Intelligence in Education,” a timely event focused on the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in the educational landscape. Attendees included University staff, faculty, and students, as well as representatives from the U.S. Embassy in Armenia and the European Union (EU) Delegation to Armenia.

The workshop began with foundational concepts of AI and advanced into the innovative realm of Generative AI (GenAI). Participants engaged in discussions about harnessing AI applications to enhance learning experiences, streamline educational processes, and address various educational challenges. The session also spotlighted the latest GenAI tools and techniques, including prompt engineering, which are reshaping the educational environment.

The workshop was led by Dr. Muhammet Demirbilek, a prominent figure in educational technology. Currently a professor at Suleyman Demirel University, Dr. Demirbilek holds a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction and is recognized for his interdisciplinary approach, which spans AI, machine learning, educational game design, and more. His extensive career includes significant contributions to several EU-funded initiatives and impactful teaching roles at the University of Florida. Dr. Demirbilek’s insights into the intersection of technology and education provided participants with valuable perspectives on implementing AI in their teaching practices.

Tatevik Zargaryan, library systems and e-services librarian at AUA’s AGBU Papazian Library, remarked: “The topic proved to be engaging, particularly given the innovative projects undertaken by Dr. Demirbilek. His proactive search for partnerships and future collaboration opportunities added a compelling dimension to the discussion.”

Dr. Brent Anders, a lecturer and researcher with a Ph.D. in education, also commented on the event, stating: “I am thrilled that AUA was able to bring in an international presenter of this level. Dr. Demirbilek offered some really important and interesting information on how to use AI in education, as well as key insights on successful prompt engineering. It was also useful to see how he has been able to work on this with many different universities around the world via Erasmus+ and other organizations.”

Dr. Demirbilek’s visit to Armenia was made possible through the EU-supported Turkey-Armenia Travel Grant 2023-2024. This initiative is part of the broader program aimed at fostering normalization processes between Armenia and Turkey.

Founded in 1991, the American University of Armenia (AUA) is a private, independent university located in Yerevan, Armenia, affiliated with the University of California, and accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission in the United States. AUA provides local and international students with Western-style education through top-quality undergraduate and graduate degree and certificate programs, promotes research and innovation, encourages civic engagement and community service, and fosters democratic values.
