YEREVAN, Armenia — On June 9, the American University of Armenia (AUA) Political Science and International Affairs program Associate Professor and Assistant to the AUA President on Academic Affairs Dr. Vahram Ter-Matevosyan has published an article in the recent issue of the peer-reviewed Journal of Borderlands Studies (Q1) by Routledge. The journal is the primary publication of the Association for Borderlands Studies, a leading international scholarly association dedicated to providing a forum for scholars and researchers to study and exchange ideas, information, and analysis pertaining to international borders and the processes and communities engendered by such borders.

PSIA Faculty Vahram Ter-Matevosyan Publishes in Journal of Borderlands StudiesThe article by Dr. Ter-Matevosyan, titled “From Transcaucasia to the South Caucasus: Structural and Discursive Predicaments in Armenia’s Regional Integration,” maintains that policy practitioners and scholars have long believed that the South Caucasus, as a distinct region, will have no future as long as its regional conflicts remain unresolved, borders are disputed or sealed, and economic cooperation is minimal. The author claims that the missing component in such analyses is how the three countries of the region Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia view the Caucasus from within as a political project and a geospatial unit.

To fill this lacuna, the article explores how Armenia’s political and intellectual elites have perceived the shaping, (re)invention, and evolution of the Caucasus, as well as the progress and results of integration projects therein over the last 200 years.

“This paper is an important contribution to the scholarly literature on this topic as it raises questions of geopolitical, political, and historical significance. Looking at the context of regional problems through historical lenses is a helpful intellectual exercise. I hope this paper answers some of the questions currently discussed in academia,” added Professor Ter-Matevosyan.

The Political Science and International Affairs program of the American University of Armenia (AUA) equips students with advanced analytical reasoning, critical thinking, and communication skills through the study of political science and international affairs, emphasizing local and global perspectives and practical applications of theory.
