AUA’s Artur Avanesov Receives the Title of Docent

YEREVAN, Armenia The American University of Armenia (AUA) is proud to share the announcement by the Higher Attestation Commission of the Republic of Armenia conferring Dr. Artur Avanesov the title of docent (equivalent to the rank of Associate Professor). Dr. Avanesov teaches several General Education courses at AUA, including Music Appreciation, Music and Literature, Music Theory, and Understanding the Twentieth Century Through Music. He says “Teaching at AUA is rather like learning anew. The students sometimes offer such unexpected perspectives that stimulate thinking and learning.” 

Avanesov has studied piano and composition at the Yerevan State Conservatory and holds a doctorate in musicology from the Academy of Sciences (2005). He is chair of musical composition at the Komitas State Conservatory of Yerevan, where he has taught since his graduation and now teaches Musical Composition and Twentieth-Century Avant-garde Music.  

He has composed dozens of chamber, piano, and choral works. Notable among his works are Cantata I, Clarinet Concerto, and others.   

Avanesov also has authored over thirty articles published in peer-reviewed journals and other publications, including a series of articles on Armenian music of the postmodern era published by the Academy of Sciences, and Parallels Unforeseen: Classical Music in Armenia and Azerbaijan Before and After the Karabakh Conflict soon to appear in a special edition to be published by the Eurasia Partnership Foundation.

He is the co-founder of several music ensembles, among which Assonance Contemporary Music Ensemble founded in 2017 and dedicated to presenting regional and world premieres of contemporary works.
