2 min read

The American University of Armenia (AUA) Acopian Center for the Environment in partnership with the Government of Armenia has launched the Waste Quantity and Composition Study (WQCS) funded by the AUA Manoogian Simone Research Fund (MSRF).

From seven international proposals received during the bid solicitation, the UK-based Eunomia Research & Consulting has been selected as implementing partner of the project.

The project will study the quantity and composition of municipal solid waste, construction and demolition waste, industrial waste, electrical and electronic waste, agricultural and horticultural waste, medical waste, automotive waste by region and community types. For specific waste streams, the project will also assess their calorific value. The results of this study are expected to be ready by the end of September 2019.

Importantly, the project will offer training to local experts and personnel on conducting such studies, helping enhance in-country capacity.

The Armenian Government’s reform agenda is aimed at achieving EU-approximation within the framework of the EU-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA) also contributing to Armenia’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within the 2030 Agenda.

The results of the research will support Government of Armenia’s development and implementation of a comprehensive waste governance and management policy based on the principles of circular economy. The ultimate goal is to have information to make decisions on investments in waste collection, recycling, soil remediation possibilities, and energy recovery.

The project will engage local experts and local governments in different regions of Armenia. This enhanced capacity is expected to be used for ongoing waste sampling and analysis needs of the country. For more details visit the project website at http://wqcs.ace.aua.am.

The WQCS is initiated upon agreement by the Fund donor and the Government of Armenia to address the pressing solid waste management needs in the country. It predates the establishment of the the Fund’s call for proposals and selection panel.

The AUA Acopian Center for the Environment, a research center of the American University of Armenia, promotes the protection and restoration of the natural environment through research, education, and community outreach. The AUA Acopian Center’s focus areas include sustainable natural resource management, biodiversity and conservation, greening the built environment, clean energy, and energy efficiency, as well as information technology and the environment.
