YEREVAN, Armenia ‒ On November 12, 2018, one of the loyal donors of the American University of Armenia (AUA), the President of the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) Berge Setrakian, JD, accompanied by AGBU-Armenia President Vasken Yacoubian, visited AUA. Both Setrakian and Yacoubian are members of the AUA Board of Trustees.

AUA President Dr. Armen Der Kiureghian and Vice President of Operations Ashot Ghazaryan greeted the AUA Trustees and took a tour of the recently inaugurated Student Union, Faculty Center, and Amphitheater.

“It was a pleasure to once again welcome the President of AGBU, Berge Setrakian, and President of AGBU-Armenia, Vasken Yacoubian, to our campus ‒ this time at a time of the year when the University is in full session and students are busy with their midterms and projects,” said Dr. Der Kiureghian. “Mr. Setrakian, who is also a long-term member of the Board of Trustees of AUA as well as a major donor to the University, was especially happy to see our new Student Union, where students were busy studying, tutoring, socializing and playing chess. He even liked the food in our cafeteria!”

President Der Kiureghian presented a snapshot briefing of the recent enrollment numbers and faculty appointments. Inquiring about the ratio of international students enrolled at AUA, Setrakian expressed his readiness to continue sponsoring students from the Armenian Diaspora to study abroad at AUA.

“Vasken and I had a very pleasant visit to AUA. We experienced the positive environment and atmosphere that exists there and had the opportunity to have lunch in the AUA canteen with the students. It was very refreshing. The latest expansion of the facilities came along very beautifully, ”noted Setrakian.

The AGBU has been providing steadfast support to AUA since its founding in 1991. It was thanks to AGBU’s generous support and the creation of the endowment fund for AUA that the University became a reality and is on an unfaltering growth trajectory.

Founded in 1991, the American University of Armenia (AUA) is a private, independent university located in Yerevan, Armenia, and affiliated with the University of California. AUA provides a global education in Armenia and the region, offering high-quality graduate and undergraduate studies, encouraging civic engagement, and promoting public service and democratic values.
