Armenians in 2115: Strategic Directions for the Twenty-First Century

2 min read

YEREVAN, Armenia – On January 26, The American University of Armenia (AUA) co-hosted the launch of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation report, Armenians in 2115: Strategic Directions for the Twenty-First Century—the outcome of a seminar organized in Lisbon, Portugal for the global Armenian leadership.

The public discussion at AUA, along with two parallel discussions in Los Angeles and London, was streamed live and explored the question, “How do we create new ways of being Armenian in the 21st Century?” which was informed by the Gulbenkian report.

In Yerevan, the discussion panelists were Samuel Samuelyan, Mark Grigoryan, and Arman Jilavyan. The chair of the Yerevan panel was AUA President Armen Der Kiureghian. The panel in London was chaired by Razmik Panossian, and featured Armine Ishkanian and Hratch Tchilingirian. The discussion in Los Angeles was moderated by Salpi Ghazarian and Raffy Ardhaljian.

According to a release by the Armenian Communities Department of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, “the report instigated debates within the Armenian world regarding some of the fundamental problems facing the Armenian people in the 21st Century, encouraging future-oriented strategic thinking and research.”

The social media campaign and live streaming of the launch also generated many important questions and comments, all of which could not be addressed due to time constraints, according to the same release.  “We realize that some key questions are still circulating online and we would like to encourage people to continue the discussions amongst themselves. We would like to allow people some time to read and reflect on the report, while we also reflect on the launch, feedback and the next steps,” the release reads.

The launch of the report took place in partnership with the London School of Economics and Political Science (Department of Social Policy), University of Southern California (Institute of Armenian Studies), and the American University of Armenia (the President’s Office). The Civilitas Foundation provided technical and media support; the social media campaign was executed by IDeA Foundation and 100 LIVES.

The official podcast of the launch is available for viewing, and the full report can be downloaded in English and Armenian.
