AUA Students, Faculty, and Alumni Compete in Community-Wide Soccer Tournament

< 1 min read

This month, alumni, faculty, and students of the American University of Armenia (AUA) gathered for a series of soccer games at the Russian-Armenian Slavonic University. The games, organized by Student Council, culminated with the final tournament on Sunday, June 16, 2013.

The tournament was a student-led initiative aiming to bring together the AUA community. Eight teams, divided by faculty, alumni, and academic department, competed in a series of matches which took place over the course of a month. Student Council Vice President Kristine Kartshikyan explains, “We thought this would be a fun way to encourage interaction between different academic departments, faculty, and alumni, and to create some friendly competition. Both the players and the crowd were enthusiastic and engaged. It was a great success!”

The winners of the tournament were the Faculty team, followed by the Alumni team in second place, and the graduating Full-Time MBA students in third place. “We hope to incorporate more events like this in the future. In the game there are no barriers—students, faculty, and alumni are all equal. Students, who are always learning from their professors, love to have the opportunity to compete with them as equals.”

Founded in 1991, the American University of Armenia (AUA) is a private, independent university located in Yerevan, Armenia and affiliated with the University of California. AUA provides a global education in Armenia and the region, offering high-quality, graduate and undergraduate studies, encouraging civic engagement, and promoting public service and democratic values.
