The Middle East 2017 – Old Nations, New Realities and New Challenges

April 19, 2017 @ 6:30 pm +04

Thomas Gorguissian presents a journalist’s concerned views, detailed observations, and critical analysis of the Middle East in 2017.

More than ever, the Middle East as a region is facing rapid changes, chaotic realities and harsh challenges. The whole region – of more than 400 million people – is living not just political uncertainties, but also economic disasters and demographic changes of great magnitude. These old nations’ new realities are always in the news. The region’s map is full of extremism, terrorism and clashes of civilizations. What was shaped by the Sykes-Picot Agreement in 1916 has been revisited many times in the last few years.

How are the people of the region seeing themselves after their “uprisings” and “revolutions”? How was and is Washington trying to understand, deal with, and manage these new realities? How are other powers in the region planning and playing roles in the created chaos?

Thomas Gorguissian is a Washington-based journalist and a writer. Currently he contributes from Washington frequent reports and analysis in Arabic to Al Ahram and other print and electronic publications. Over the last 25 years he has written and spoken extensively, in both Arabic and English, on Egypt’s culture, politics, and society — as well as on US foreign policy vis-a-vis the Middle East, on Washington politics, and on US-Egypt relations. He has worked with many Arab and Egyptian publications, participating in the establishment of some of them and witnessing the closure of others. He has appeared as an analyst on Al Jazeera, Al Arabiya, CNN, C-SPAN, and various International and Egyptian television networks.
