Seminar for English Language Teachers (High Schools and Universities)

November 17, 2017 @ 5:00 pm - 7:15 pm +04

About the Event:
Curiosity and wonder drives us to explore but what does this actually mean and how can we exploit this in the English Language classroom. This talk looks at methods and resources teachers can use and adapt to draw out the natural curiosity of students of all ages. The classroom, or learning in general, can no longer be dull and boring. Teachers are fighting for the attention of students and with attention spans shortening year on year delivering interesting, motivating and inspiring lessons is becoming ever more important, and increasingly more challenging for teachers. Drawing from TED Talks and other National Geographic Learning resources, this talk demonstrates practical ideas teachers can use to regain the focus of students, re-engage their brains and get them thinking about the wider world around them.

The Power of the image
Visual literacy is now recognized as a key 21st century skill. We live in a world where images are used more than ever to reinforce, and at times replace, the spoken and written word. To present discourse without them is both unrealistic and unhelpful. Our memories work in pictures, our experiences are stored using them. The use of powerful images can help students to remember language more easily. This talk examines how we can use photography to reinforce learning and offers some practical examples of teaching activities using photos from the National Geographic archive and its very successful series, LIFE.

About the Speaker:

Tim Pearse graduated from university in 1997, did his TESOL in 1999 and has been working in ELT ever since in various capacities. In 2013 he started working for National Geographic Learning and is now the regional representative for Central Asia, Central and Eastern Europe and Russia. He’s passionate about the methodology of how to motivate and inspire students; how to bring the classroom to life and how to integrate a lot more than simply learning the language into English courses. He travels far and wide listening to and picking up ideas from teachers in different countries and cultures, as well as sharing ideas and best practice on how to develop and support teachers and students with engaging resources. Tim is originally from the North of England – he enjoys sport, reading, music and trying to play chess.
