Roundtable Discussion on Armenia’s Tourism Competitiveness and Its Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability

July 15, 2015 @ 4:00 pm - 6:30 pm +04

THIS IS INVITATION ONLY EVENT

The AUA Acopian Center for the Environment and EV Consulting invite you to a roundtable discussion on the link between Armenia’s tourism competitiveness and its natural resources and environmental sustainability.

The discussion will be held on Wednesday, July 15, 2015, 4 p.m., at AUA’s Paramaz Avedisian Building, Conference room 233W.

We have invited 25 professionals from the fields of tourism, economic and regional development, government policy makers, NGOs, and industry (Tufenkian, Hyur Svc’s, Incoming Tour Operators Union, etc.).

The impetus behind organizing this roundtable discussion is the 2015 Tourism and Travel Competitiveness Report published by the World Economic Forum. In this report Armenia ranks 89 out of 141, placing it lower than Georgia and Azerbaijan. Two of the fourteen factors used in determining a country’s tourism and travel competitiveness are related to natural resources and environmental sustainability. Armenia performs poorly in both.

This gives rise to several questions. Do these rankings accurately capture the status of natural resources and environmental sustainability in Armenia? To what extent are these rankings based on perceptions of individuals interviewed for the competitiveness report and to what extent are they based on hard evidence? What can be done to improve Armenia’s environmental standing in the ranking?

The Armenian contribution to the global competitiveness report is prepared by EV Consulting. The full 2015 report can be accessed here [http://ev.am/sites/default/files/attachments/pdf/Global_Travel%26Tourism_Report_2015.pdf]. You may also find an overview of the key ranking factors here [http://reports.weforum.org/travel-and-tourism-competitiveness-report-2015/economies/#economy=ARM].

Our overall goal is to identify paths key stakeholders can pursue to improve Armenia’s standing in the global tourism and travel ranking.
