Public Health Seminar: How to Become a Fulbright Scholar?

April 15, 2013 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm +04

The American University of Armenia’s (AUA) School of Public Health is organizing a seminar on how to become a Fullbright Scholar on April 15 at 6:30 pm. The event, to be held in PAB room 213W, will feature remarks by Dr. Dana Walrath–a Fulbright Scholar at the AUA School of Public Health and Dr. Peter Bingham–a Fulbright Scholar at Yerevan State Medical University. The two will discuss details about the Fullbright Scholar Exchange Program as well as share their own experiences in Armenia.

Dana Walrath, PhD, MFA is currently a Fulbright Scholar at the AUA School of Public Health; she is working on a project that builds upon her Aliceheimer’s series titled “the Narrative Anthropology of Aging in Armenia.” She is an Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Vermont and a Women’s and Gender Studies affiliated faculty member.

After earning her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, she taught at the University of Pennsylvania and Temple University. Dr. Walrath broke new ground in medical and biological anthropology through her work on biocultural aspects of childbirth.

She has also written on a wide range of topics related to gender in paleoanthropology, the social production of sickness and health, sex differences, genetics, and evolutionary medicine. Her work has appeared in edited volumes and in journals such as Current Anthropology, American Anthropologist, American Journal of Physical Anthropology, and Anthropology Now. She is also a co-author of a leading anthropology textbook series that is published in a variety of languages.

Peter M. Bingham is currently a Fulbright Scholar at Yerevan State Medical University; he is an Associate Professor of Neurology & Pediatrics at the University of Vermont. He earned a BA in biology from Harvard College, an MD from Columbia University, and completed his post-graduate training at the University of Pennsylvania.

As a clinician dedicated to general pediatric neurology, Dr. Bingham sees the broad range of patients including those with epilepsy, headache, genetic and inflammatory diseases of the nervous system (including muscular dystrophy), autism, developmental and learning problems, tics and Tourette syndrome.

Finding that Armenian and American pediatric neurologists face many similar access issues related to this clinical specialty, Dr. Bingham’s Fulbright project is a qualitative, community-building effort focused on how and when primary care physicians refer to pediatric neurologists. Dr. Bingham has received support for his research on developmental assessment and promotion of feeding by premature infants from the NIH. More recent studies of therapeutic applications of breath biofeedback games for children with cystic fibrosis and asthma have been supported by the NIH as well as the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

These research programs have led to 2 patents in the field of pediatric neurorehabilitation. The overall philosophy of his research is that the best interventions to promote children’s learning and development will accord with their needs for relatedness, competence, and autonomy.
