PSIA talk “Democracy within (non-state) organizations: why and how? ” by Axel Gosseries, Professor, Louvain University (Belgium), Chaire Hoover d’éthique économique et sociale.

The talk will take place on Tuesday (October 14), hours 12:00-13:00, in PAB room 233W.

For those who believe in the need for democracy, for an inclusive demos, for participatory institutions, for deliberative politics, for separation of powers,…, the question arises as to whether non-state organizations such as universities (public or private), church organizations, political parties, private firms, etc should not be subject to the same democratic requirements. For instance, should students not have the right to vote in universities, or workers in private firms? We will look into the possible justifications for democratizing organizations as well as the specific challenges that this may raise in specific organizations.
