Poetry Translation as a Creative Experience

Join us for a hands-on poetry translation workshop with CTRA graduate Ruzanna Amiraghyan and prominent American poet, essayist, journalist and translator Christopher Merrill, who is on a visit to Armenia with the Lines and Spaces Reading Tour. This will be a unique opportunity for AUA’s translation and creative writing students as well as all those interested in literary translation. The event is co-organized by the Certificate in Translation Program (CTRA), the College of Humanities & Social Sciences (CHSS), the US Embassy, and ARI Literature Foundation.
 
About the Speakers:
 
Ruzanna Amiraghyan is a translator and copywriter with twenty years of experience. She lectures at the Yerevan State University, and also runs a copywriting studio. She has published nonfiction as well as literary translations, including poems by Christopher Merrill. She is currently collaborating with Merrill on a book-length translation of his poetry into Armenian.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

Christopher Merrill has published six books of poetry, including Watch Fire, for which he received the Lavan Younger Poets Award from the Academy of American Poets; many edited volumes and books of translations; and six works of nonfiction, among them, Only the Nails Remain: Scenes from the Balkan Wars and Things of the Hidden God: Journey to the Holy Mountain, and The Tree of the Doves: Ceremony, Expedition, War, chronicling his travels in Asia and the Middle East in the wake of the war on terror. His work has been translated into twenty-five languages; his honors include a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres. A member of the National Council on the Humanities and the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO, he directs the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa.
