Network Virtualization

March 30, 2016 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm +04

The ARPA Institute Distance Learning Program in partnership with the AUA Entrepreneurship & Product Innovation Center, organized an online presentation by Dr. George N. Rouskas to speak about network virtualization for March 30th. Network virtualization refers to a broad set of technologies. Commercial solutions have been offered by the industry for years, while more recently the academic community has emphasized virtualization as an enabler for network architecture research, deployment, and experimentation. In the presentation, we review the entire spectrum of relevant approaches with the goal of identifying the underlying commonalities. We also discuss a set of challenges and research directions that we expect to come to the forefront as network virtualization technologies proliferate.

RouskasGeorge N. Rouskas is the Director of Graduate Programs and a Professor of Computer Science at North Carolina State University, which he joined in 1994. Dr. Rouskas maintains an active and well-funded research program in the field of computer networking, he has created several Computer Science courses and taught thousands of students, and serves the University and research community in various roles.

Professor Rouskas received the Ph.D. and M. S. degrees in Computer Science from the College of Computing, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA, in 1994 and 1991, respectively, and his undergraduate degree in Computer Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Athens, Greece, in 1989. During the 2000-2001 academic year he spent a sabbatical term at Vitesse Semiconductor, Morrisville, NC, and in May 2000, December 2002, and July 2006 he was an Invited Professor at the Laboratoire de Méthodes Informatiques, University of Evry, France.

Dr. Rouskas received the 2004 ALCOA Foundation Engineering Research Achievement Award, and the 2003 NCSU Alumni Outstanding Research Award. He is a recipient of a 1997 NSF Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award and of the 1994 Graduate Research Assistant Award from the College of Computing, Georgia Tech. He is a co-author of three papers that received Best Paper Awards at the 1998 SPIE conference on All-Optical Networking, at the 2006 CSNDSP conference, and at the 2007 IEEE/IFIP EVGM workshop. Dr. Rouskas is especially proud of his teaching awards, including his induction in the NCSU Academy of Outstanding Teachers in 2004, and the Outstanding New Teacher Award he received from the Department of Computer Science in 1995.

Dr. Rouskas serves as the Vice Chair of the IEEE Optical Networking Technical Committee (ONTC) in 2014-15. He served as the Secretary of ONCT in 2012-2013, and as an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer for the Communications Society in 2010-2011. He founded and serves as co-editor-in-chief of Optical Switching and Networking (OSN), an Elsevier journal. He has served on the editorial boards of the IEEE/OSA Journal of Optical Communications and Netowking, the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, Computer Networks, and Optical Networks. He was a co-guest editor for the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications, Special Issue on Protocols and Architectures for Next Generation Optical WDM Networks, published in October, 2000, and for the Journal of Communications Special Issue on Advances in Communications and Networking, published in December 2011. He was technical program co-chair of the Networking 2004 conference, general co-chair of the IEEE LANMAN 2005 workshop, program chair of the IEEE LANMAN 2004 workshop, program co-chair of the Traffic Grooming workshop 2004, general co-chair for BROADNETS 2007, program co-chair of the Optical Networks and Systems (ONS) Symposium of the IEEE GLOBECOM 2010 conference, program co-chair of ICCCN 2011, general chair of ICCCN 2013, and general co-chair of IEEE ICNP 2014. He also served as the founding director of the Masters of Science in Computer Networking (MSCN) degree program at North Carolina State University.

Dr. Rouskas is a Fellow of the IEEE, a member of the ACM, and a member of the Technical Chamber of Greece.
