Aiming High, or How to Succeed in the New World Order

November 20, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm +04

About the Speaker:
Garo H. Armen, Ph.D. is a Turkish-born entrepreneur, visionary and philanthropist of Armenian descent. He is the Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Agenus Inc., a biotechnology company with a long-standing commitment to immuno-oncology, a blooming therapeutic field that offers unprecedented curative potential to patients afflicted by cancer.

During his stewardship of Agenus Dr. Armen was asked to serve as the Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors for the biopharmaceutical company Élan Corporation at a time when the company was on the verge of bankruptcy instigated by an accounting scandal. During his tenure at Élan from mid-2002 to 2004, Armen became the architect of the company’s $2.5 billion restructuring program that revitalized Élan’s finances, refocused the group on its core clinical development business and restored shareholder value. In 2000 Dr. Armen visited Armenia, a trip that inspired the genesis of the Children of Armenia Fund (COAF). COAF is a non-profit charitable organization that he founded with the unwavering mission to create and implement rural outreach programs that would empower young Armenians living in rural villages through education. Since COAF’s inception, he has raised over 25 million dollars for communities in 44 Armenian villages, improving the socio-economic landscape of rural Armenia and transforming the lives of thousands of children and their families.

Dr. Armen is the recipient of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor for his humanitarian efforts in Armenia; the Humanitarian Award from the Sabin Vaccine Institute, which recognizes extraordinary individuals in the field of biotechnology; the Medal of Honor from the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia for his outstanding contributions; and the Gold Medal and Honorary Citizen of the State from the Governor of Armavir Marz for outstanding philanthropic work.

He was born in 1953 in Istanbul, Turkey and migrated to United States in 1970. He received his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the City University of New York in 1979, and served as a research fellow at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. He transitioned from academia to Wall Street in 1981 and founded the money management firm, Armen Partners, specializing in public and private healthcare investments. He continued to excel in this realm and went on to engineer the merger transaction between Immunex Corporation and Lederle Oncology, a division of American Cyanamid, one of his many entrepreneurial accomplishments leading up to the founding of Agenus.
