YEREVAN, Armenia — In a remarkable display of generosity, Dr. Vicken and Mrs. Sossy Aharohian have once again made a significant contribution to the academic community at the American University of Armenia (AUA). This time, their philanthropic gesture has resulted in the naming of a study room in the AUA AGBU Papazian Library, further enriching the learning environment for students, alumni, and the local community.

Not too long ago, the Aharonians also named a conference room in the AUA Main Building, 413M – Sona Hamalian Conference Room, in memory of Sossy’s twin sister, Sona Hamalian, who had served as an administrator at the University in its early years.

Raised by descendants of Armenian Genocide survivors — his parents from Zeitun and Marash (Cilicia), her parents from Aintab and Aleppo — both Vicken and Sossy grew up in Beirut, Lebanon. They attended the American University of Beirut, placing great value on education and the pursuit of professional excellence. Sossy studied nursing and became a head nurse in pediatrics at the American University Medical Center. Vicken, meanwhile, studied medicine, pursuing specialty training in cardiology in the United States and subsequently becoming director of a large interventional cardiology department in a major Los Angeles medical center, training over 100 interventional cardiologists who are well known and respected in the communities they serve.

They credit education for their personal successes, as well as providing the ability for nations to support the growth of civil society, political stability, and preparing future leaders, adding that, “We believe AUA can be instrumental in the development of Armenia toward those objectives”

Vicken and Sossy fondly reflect on their collegiate days, remembering how they benefited greatly from the use of quiet study rooms in their university’s library. “Study spaces improve concentration and motivate students to practice higher levels of critical thinking skills. They also help students benefit from the resources the library offers toward conducting their research,” they respond when asked why they chose to sponsor the space.

The AUA AGBU Papazian Library opened in 1991, the same year the University was established. The Library not only serves the students, faculty, and staff of the University, but also students and scholars from other institutions, providing access to over 31,000 volumes of books, 395,000 e-books, and around 87,000 e-journals. For students and those who benefit from the Library, the newly named study room represents more than just a place for them to study, but also a sanctuary for intellectual curiosity and exploration and a space where ideas are born and cultivated. Namings of these spaces facilitated by donors also signify support for these young scholars, serving as inspiration and reminding them of opportunities that lie ahead for them in Armenia. “Our vision for the future of Armenia is to have a democratic country free of corruption, a strong economy that benefits all its citizens, and a strong defense system to ensure the country’s long-term security,” the Aharonians say.

As the AUA AGBU Papazian Library continues to evolve and expand to meet the continued needs of those who access it, the generosity of donors like the Aharonians becomes increasingly vital. Their gift not only enhances the physical space, but also strengthens its role as a hub for the flow of ideas and the pursuit of knowledge and academic excellence.

Quoting Nelson Mandela, Vicken and Sossy add: “‘Education is the most powerful weapon that you can use to change the world.’ We encourage all like-minded individuals to invest in higher education in Armenia through AUA to try and achieve these goals.”

AUA is grateful for the Aharonians’ enduring legacy and their steadfast support of our students. To learn more about naming opportunities, visit: https://philanthropy.aua.am/naming-opportunities/

YEREVAN, Armenia — In a recent generous contribution that is poised to make an impact on generations of studious academics at the American University of Armenia (AUA), Gregory and Dawn Tarpinian named one of the study rooms in the AUA AGBU Papazian Library in memory of Gregory’s father, Aram Tarpinian.

Currently settled in Boynton Beach, Florida, the Tarpinians grew up and found academic and professional success on the East Coast. Gregory was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts and graduated from Watertown High School in 1974. A recipient of the AGBU academic scholarship, he received his B.A. and M.A. degrees in economics and completed course work and comprehensive exams for a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. For the last 16 years, he has been serving as managing director of EnTrust Global, an alternative investment firm based in New York City. His wife, Dawn (née Bevier), was born in Detroit, Michigan and boasts an extensive 30-year career in the hotel and hospitality industry. A co-founder of the Bevier-Evans Foundation, Dawn is dedicated to empowering Detroit’s youth for success in the skilled trades.

As parents to their daughter, Jenna Tarpinian, and grandparents to Aram and Ava Tarpinian-Humphries, Gregory and Dawn have always instilled in their children and grandchildren the importance of education, as well as the notion of giving back to their community. Leading by example, they recently made the decision to name the Aram Tarpinian Study Room at AUA in honor of Gregory’s father. “I wanted a way to support AUA and honor my recently deceased father Aram Tarpinian. Born to two Armenian Genocide survivors and growing up poor during the Great Depression, Aram was able, through hard work, to put himself through Northeastern University (B.S. in chemistry) and MIT (M.S. in metallurgy), before going on to play a leading role in materials research at The Watertown Arsenal, part of the Defense Advanced Research Agency, and in his field as a founder of the Materials Research Society.”

In their own lives, Gregory and Dawn have been inspired by those who came before them and feel there is no better way to honor their legacy than by contributing to the economic and social development of their motherland. “There is no better way to do that than by assisting AUA in its mission to provide leading educational opportunities,” comments Greg.

Together, they hope that others will follow suit and invest in the future generations of Armenia. “My vision is for a prosperous, democratic, dynamic Armenia that is at peace with its neighbors. The key to achieving that is through exceptional educational opportunities for Armenia’s best and brightest — and AUA is a critical component of that goal, today and for future generations to come,” Gregory expounds. AUA is grateful for the support of the Tarpinian family. To learn more about naming opportunities, click here

GLENDALE, California — The American University of Armenia (AUA) is pleased to announce the successful completion of the Yes, Armenian Women Can! (YAWC) scholarship campaign.

In 2018, the AUA Office of Development launched an ambitious initiative to raise $2.5 million in endowed scholarship funds that would support hundreds of bright women studying at the Akian College of Science and Engineering at AUA. The campaign was developed in light of the urgent need for increasing Armenia’s self-reliance and sustainability through strengthening its growing technology sector, while recognizing the importance of bolstering the involvement of women at this juncture in history.

With the support of the donor community, the program was able to make strides in empowering young women at AUA to achieve success within these fields. AUA benefactor Sandra Shahinian Leitner, trustee of the SJS Charitable Trust, was quick to lend her support when the campaign was launched. “’Yes, Armenian Women Can’ is more relevant than ever in these times – this valuable program empowers women to innovate, blaze trails and achieve their potential,” Sandra says.

One of the beneficiaries of the SJS Charitable Trust endowed scholarship, Maria Miskaryan (BSDS ‘24), expresses her gratitude: “I have been working as an AI Engineer for over two years, and AUA gave me the fundamental knowledge to succeed in this role. I am deeply grateful to my scholarship donors, as my achievements wouldn’t have been possible without their generous support.”

Soon after the launch of the campaign, a significant increase in female enrollment was recorded within these degree programs, attesting to the University’s success in achieving the central goal of the campaign. As a result, AUA was able to broaden its impact to address the relevant skills gap for women to similarly achieve mastery in entrepreneurship, leadership, management, organizational and financial planning, and beyond. To date, hundreds of women have benefitted from the campaign, with many alumni going on to find success in their careers within the workforce of Armenia and beyond.

“Equipped with an AUA education, our female students have utilized the academic resources and professional development opportunities made available at the University to graduate and take on positions within leading companies in Armenia,” comments Gaiane Khachatrian, Vice President of Development.

The University would like to extend its gratitude to the generous donors who have supported this campaign through their impactful contributions, and especially the Elias and Elizabeth Kaprielian Trust for bequeathing a major gift that helped AUA bridge the gap and reach the campaign’s goal.

The empowerment of the talented, ambitious, and inspiring women at AUA will continue to echo ripples of positive change in Armenian society. Together with their male counterparts, these students are able to open doors of opportunity that would otherwise not have been available to them. Silva Yeghiazaryan (BSCS ‘25), recipient of the Elia Kahvedjian and Arakel Dirtadian scholarship, says, “I am grateful to my donors for providing me the opportunity to realize my goals. I intend to work hard and help make Armenia one of the leading countries in the field of tech.” Her classmate, Karine Movsesyan (BSCS ‘26), recipient of the Yes, Armenian Women Can! endowed scholarship, adds, “I’d like to express my deepest gratitude to my scholarship donors for investing in my education. The campaign makes it possible for me to pursue a quality education in the field of tech, which only encourages me to work harder and reach my goals.”

The evening’s program opened with the national anthems of the United States and Armenia, as well as a prayer by Father Krikor Zakaryan. In their opening remarks, the event committee co-chairs, Valina Agbabian and Laura Dirtadian, recognized the three AUA co-founders: Dr. Armen Der Kiureghian, the late Dr. Mihran Agbabian, and the late Dr. Stepan Karamardian, before a crowd that included many of their distinguished peers from the University of California community. Dr. Der Kiureghian, the only surviving co-founder, took the stage to be recognized with a token of appreciation.

Dr. Boghosian then took the stage to provide an overview of the University, as well as the reasons for the institution’s need to expand: “We now find ourselves refusing students with high SAT scores, and this is a problem because we really don’t want to exclude such talented and promising students. If students at this level cannot secure a position at AUA, they often emigrate, and we would like to do our part to prevent that. So it is time for us to expand once again.”

Following Dr. Boghosian, Dr. Zorian reflected on the success of AUA since its inception: “What AUA has given us so far is extremely impressive. The students graduate, they join the workforce, and work to give back to Armenia, in both the private and public sectors.” He continued to commend the Armenian Diaspora for its efforts, emphasizing the importance of investing in education in Armenia.

Lebaredian then took the audience on a journey, from his upbringing to his personal efforts in helping open NVIDIA’s office in Armenia. He also mentioned a recent update on the country’s approved budget to build a supercomputer, following a meeting between Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and NVIDIA Co-Founder and CEO Jensen Huang. Touting the importance of artificial intelligence, especially for a small country like Armenia, Lebaredian reiterated the need to support this growth through institutions like AUA: “Education is the engine of growth and prosperity, and this is a great opportunity for Armenia to compete on the world stage, despite its size.”

Michael A. Goorjian, director, writer, actor of Amerikatski

As the final featured guest, Goorjian spoke about his experiences filming Amerikatsi in Armenia and the connection he made with his homeland through the process. He also touched on the idea of hope that was conveyed in his film and pressed the importance of collectively looking to the future and how institutions like AUA play a pivotal role in that.

YEREVAN, Armenia The American University of Armenia (AUA) has initiated groundbreaking efforts for the construction of the new Science and Engineering building and is now embracing a revised plan: the additional construction of the new Humanities and Social Sciences building and Arts building, along with an atrium that will connect all three buildings. The initial capital undertaking was expanded pursuant to magnanimous contributions by the Avedisian and Akian families earmarked for this ambitious endeavor.

Expansion of the University’s physical space will enable AUA to appropriately respond to the growing demand for the excellent education it delivers and prevent the University from turning away highly qualified students due to space restrictions. Possessing the qualifications for admission to competitive universities in other countries, many of these students who are turned away, then leave Armenia to study abroad. With the University’s student population projected to significantly increase in the next five years, AUA is arduously involved in updating its curricula and preparing to introduce new degree programs in science, engineering, humanities, social sciences, and the arts.

In August 2023, AUA announced a $20 million gift from Pamela Wood Avedisian in honor of her late husband, Edward Avedisian, and his steadfast support for over 20 years as an AUA trustee, philanthropist, and visionary. As part of this tremendous contribution, the new Edward and Pamela Avedisian Building will be dedicated to the humanities and social sciences, with the Paruyr Sevak Building to the arts program. “Edward was truly excited to see AUA grow and evolve over the past three decades and wanted us to contribute to that development. We both understood the need for expansion to further broaden the University’s offerings and fields of excellence,” said Pamela.

Following this news, Zaven P. and his late wife Sonia Akian also announced their significant contribution of $9 million to name the new science and engineering building the Akian Family Building. Zaven expressed, “I had felt for a long time that AUA’s College of Science & Engineering needed physical expansion to facilitate the addition of new degree programs in other critical disciplines and state-of-the-art laboratories. I couldn’t ignore the financial need to make this a reality; I wanted to ensure that the College would be transformed into a fully-fledged quality STEM educational center in our homeland for generations to come.”

Connecting all three new buildings and providing separate entrances will be an atrium called the Founders’ Atrium, which will also be used for various cultural, academic, and other collaborative events. An important component will also be underground parking.

Aligned with the academic disciplines to be housed in these buildings, the revised construction strategy reinforces the functionality of the two buildings to better meet the University’s growing enrollment numbers in the associated programs.

The new buildings will include state-of-the-art classrooms, offices, science and engineering laboratories, conference rooms, auditoriums, art studios, music rooms, and other functional spaces. Donors will also have the chance to leave their mark in the new buildings through various naming opportunities. A select group of steadfast supporters have already committed to naming facilities in the new buildings. In addition to the Akian and Avedisian families, these benefactors include Sarkis and Ruth Bedevian; Jack Munushian Charitable Trust, Gary R. Phillips and Zourab Bassmadjian, co-trustees; Paul and Kate Agbabian; Albert and Terry Bezjian; and Hagop and Iroula Manuelian.

AUA initially launched its efforts for expansion through the Build a Better Future with AUA capital campaign solely for building a new science and engineering building. Now, with the revised construction strategy that includes the addition of two new buildings, along with the understanding that AUA plays a critical role in Armenia’s need to accelerate progress and innovation in science, technology, and engineering as they relate to humanities, social sciences, and the arts, the institution has set a goal of $50 million to successfully complete this ambitious undertaking. With over $30 million of the targeted amount raised from major and other donor funds, AUA continues to promote fundraising efforts to complete the capital campaign.

Initial planning for the new buildings’ construction is currently underway. The AUA Building Committee, chaired by President Emeritus Dr. Armen Der Kiureghian, has identified, interviewed, and shortlisted architectural firms and selected Moore Ruble Yudell Architects & Planners for the project. Long-time friend and supporter of the University, Ronald Altoon, FAIA, LEED AP, president and CEO of Altoon Strategic consulting firm and former president of the American Institute of Architects, agreed to advise and provide guidance to the Committee. At the same time, the University is appealing to the community, once again, to help raise the funds necessary to proceed with the planned expansion and to extend their support to ensure the sustained provision of the quality of education AUA aims to deliver in Armenia.

As AUA Pillars and ChangeMakers, they have generously supported AUA’s scholarship program, named the Bezjian Cafeteria in the Main Building on campus, and recently contributed to the University’s capital campaign, Build a Better Future with AUA, which aims to strategically expand campus facilities and academic programs.

Albert Bezjian, originally from Beirut, Lebanon, attended the local Armenian Evangelical College. In 1959, he relocated to Los Angeles to pursue his studies at California State University, Los Angeles, where he earned a B.S. degree in electro-mechanical engineering. During his undergraduate years, Albert worked as a product engineer, supplying parts to aerospace companies, including the Apollo project.

Shortly after, Albert was joined by his parents who emigrated to the United States in 1964. Two years later, they acquired a small Armenian grocery store in Hollywood, specializing in Armenian and Indian groceries, which they renamed Bezjian’s Grocery. It quickly became a renowned destination in Southern California. “Tour buses would bring tourists to the store to see the variety of products we carried from all over the world,” Albert fondly remembers. During this time, Albert also found success In his personal life. In 1965, he married Terry, and together, they started a family and were blessed with daughters Linda and Nancy.

By 1969, the aerospace industry was shrinking, prompting Albert to explore a new opportunity driven by Southern California’s growing immigrant population. He joined his parents in their grocery business and by 1975, expanded it to a wholesale operation called Indo-European Foods. The name was inspired by the association of Armenian with the family of Indo-European languages and the rich selection of food products it offered. Among Albert’s notable accomplishments is his creation of ZerGut, a brand of high-quality food products produced in Bulgaria by USDA and FDA food quality and safety standards. For over four decades, Albert nurtured Indo-European Foods, supplying goods to national and regional supermarkets and over 1,000 independent ethnic food retailers and distributors. In 2007, he sold the company, staying on board for a few more years to assist the new owners during the transition.

The Bezjians’ business success paved the way for their unwavering commitment to philanthropy. Particularly, their involvement in AUA has played a crucial role in increasing access to quality higher education to deserving students in Armenia. “We were impressed with what we learned about the University, especially its association with the University of California, which manages AUA’s endowments,” Albert recalls.

Albert and Terry are among the 100 Pillars of the University, an exclusive group of supporters whose investments buttress the foundation that provides students the benefit of an AUA education, as well as AUA Changemakers. “Armenia may not be a rich country and abundant in mineral or oil resources like its neighboring countries, but it boasts smart and ambitious young individuals hungry for higher education. AUA, with its impressive curriculum and international faculty, provides the highest level of education a university can offer in Armenia,” the Bezjians assert.

In 2019, the Bezjians fittingly named a campus facility, the Albert and Terry Bezjian Cafeteria, which serves hundreds of students, faculty, staff, and visitors on a daily basis. The renovated cafeteria has become a popular hangout on campus, offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner six days a week.

More recently, Albert and Terry lent their support to the Build a Better Future with AUA capital campaign. This campaign will support the construction of three new buildings slated for science and engineering, humanities and social sciences, and arts. This campus buildup will also enable the University to expand its academic offerings and accommodate the projected doubled enrollment within the next five years. Given Albert’s academic background in engineering, he takes pride in this undertaking: “My wife, Terry, and I are pleased to help fund the construction of the new STEM building at AUA. There is nothing more important than education for the future of Armenia, and the sciences are among the top priorities.”

The Bezijans’ remarkable philanthropy enriches the AUA community, providing students and faculty with enhanced opportunities and resources. Through their active involvement, the Bezjians hope to inspire others in the community to value education thereby augmenting the capacity of Armenia’s youth. “The least that Armenians in the Diaspora can do is to make education affordable for these young boys and girls through more scholarships for higher education so they develop professional expertise and prosper. Armenia’s future depends on educating our youth to reach their full potential.”

GLENDALE, California — Anna Bakunts (MBA ’11) embarked on a profound educational journey that diverged from the conventional path to higher learning. Her university education began in Los Angeles, after which she was drawn to her ancestral homeland to study at the American University of Armenia (AUA). This decision not only shaped her academic and professional career, but also ignited in her a special connection with Armenia.

Bakunts was born in Yerevan, Armenia and immigrated to Los Angeles, California with her family at the age of 16. “My parents worked as neurologists in their respective hospitals in Yerevan, and placed utmost importance on education. They wanted to ensure the best opportunities for my sister and me, and they raised us to place great value on our education, integrity, ethics, and patriotism. I honor them for their dedication and sacrifice.”

In 2009, she completed her undergraduate studies at the University of California, Irvine. Subsequently, she attended Pembroke College at the University of Cambridge in England. Recounting what compelled her to pursue graduate studies at AUA, she praises her parents’ guidance and the judicious advice of one of her favorite professors.

“My parents always spoke fondly of their university years, where they had formed lifelong friendships and experienced a sense of camaraderie that left a lasting mark in their lives. Their experience was rather different when compared to the education system in the United States, where such deep connections seem elusive. Their stories planted the seed of curiosity in me, but it was my Economics professor at the University of Cambridge who steered me toward a different path. Instead of pursuing an MBA at Cambridge, he advised me to seek a school that offered not just quality education but an experience that would shape my character and life perspective. Without any hesitation, the American University of Armenia was my choice.”

Throughout her MBA studies at AUA, Bakunts asserts, the knowledge and skills she acquired shaped in her a unique mindset that set her apart throughout her career and life beyond the classroom. She reflects on how the University’s academic rigor challenged her to strive for knowledge, growing her intellectual curiosity and encouraging her to think critically, conduct independent research, and articulate her ideas effectively. “These skills have been invaluable in embracing challenges with confidence and creativity. AUA’s multidisciplinary approach also broadened my horizons, allowing me to connect seemingly unrelated fields,” she expounds.

HR Lab logoCurrently, Bakunts is the Executive Director at HR Lab Los Angeles, a consulting and advisory firm she founded in 2020. HR Lab Los Angeles specializes in human resource compliance, counseling small and medium-sized businesses in the greater Los Angeles area. Alongside her team of professionals from different backgrounds, she strives to serve as a go-to resource for her clients, invariably utilizing a multicultural stance to meet the diverse needs of her customers.

Bakunts credits AUA for equipping her with an interdisciplinary perspective that has provided her with significant career advantages, enabling her to tackle complex problems with innovative approaches and devise creative solutions. “AUA emphasized communication and teamwork through group projects, presentations, and interactive discussions. These skills are indispensable in today’s workplace, where collaboration and effective communication are key to competitive advantage and success. AUA’s global perspective and emphasis on critical thinking and problem-solving have consistently made me a valuable asset to employers and colleagues alike,” she expounds. In addition to personal growth, AUA has instilled in her a strong sense of social responsibility that made her aware of the importance of making a positive impact on society. “This sense of purpose has guided my career choices and motivated me to seek opportunities for meaningful change.”

Anna Bakunts holding a cup of coffeeIn 2022, Bakunts attended AUA’s 30th anniversary event in Los Angeles, which was co-sponsored by HR Lab Los Angeles. The celebration was dedicated to mustering support for the Build a Better Future With AUA capital campaign. As a donor herself to the campaign in the category of “Builder,” Bakunts has exemplified the alumni spirit of gratitude and expressed belief in AUA’s role in higher education. “HR Lab sponsored the event because we recognize that we give each other wings by giving back and sharing what we know. Times have changed, and it’s more about spreading what you know than keeping it to yourself and worrying about competing with others. This way, you are continuously improving while giving back at the same time,” Bakunts explains.

In her view, the University must embrace physical as well as programmatic growth to enable increased rates of acceptance of local students and applicants from abroad. She adds, “The more educated our coming generation, the stronger our country. AUA students play a significant role in this because they are part of Armenia’s top talent. By receiving phenomenal education, they can continue building a better future for generations to come. Their success is our success.”

Recently, Bakunts was featured as a special guest at an event hosted by Golden State Bank to welcome Dr. Bruce Boghosian as the new AUA president. Recounting the years she spent at AUA and the impact that had on her, she underscores the imperative of conveying one’s regard and appreciation as an AUA alumna: “Being an AUA alumna means being part of a growing and supportive alumni network, providing mentorship to current students, and collaborating with the University and other alumni to benefit development initiatives. This network reinforces the idea that we are part of something bigger than ourselves.”

Recounting her transformative AUA journey, Bakunts wishes for others to have the same experience, highly recommending the same opportunity to other students, especially to fellow Diasporan Armenians. “It’s not just about gaining knowledge; it’s about connecting with your heritage, immersing yourself in our rich culture, and forming lifelong friendships. Studying at AUA is a unique opportunity to deepen your understanding of our roots. It’s a chance to continue the legacy of our ancestors and contribute to the advancement of our homeland. AUA offers not just an education but an experience that will profoundly shape your character and perspective.”

From AUA students to alumni to donors, each is an indispensable constituent for building a strong foundation for the future of Armenia.

GLENDALE, California — Hagop and Iroula Manuelian have been supporters of the American University of Armenia (AUA) since the 1990s, when the institution was still in its infancy. Recently, they committed to sponsoring the special Vision for the Future: Advancing Higher Education in Armenia event in support of the Build a Better Future With AUA capital campaign.

As ‘Developers’ of the University, the Manuelians have been staunch supporters of AUA in its quest to provide top-tier education to the youth in Armenia. To elaborate on why they find it so important to be part of this special initiative, Hagop shared with us a story that goes back decades.

Delving into the history of missionaries in the Middle East, he begins with a brief overview of how the many American universities around the region came to be, starting in the 1850s. Originally established as missions, they were later converted to universities. The American University of Beirut (AUB) was the first to be founded in 1867, followed by the American University of Cairo and Robert’s College in Istanbul. “I was thrilled and proud when I learned that the fourth American University to be established in the region would be in Yerevan!” Manuelian exclaimed, adding that AUA’s partnership with the University of California assures him of its lasting success.

Manuelian continues to explain the French government’s instrumental role in settling Armenian refugees in Syria and Lebanon after the Armenian Genocide. His father was among the first refugees who, against all odds, were able to attend AUB, remaining there for almost a decade — first as a student, then as a professor, before eventually graduating as a medical doctor. He worked there until he repaid his tuition debts to the University, subsequently establishing a clinic in his home in the Armenian quarter. He helped underserved populations who could not afford medical care, often providing his services pro bono, which earned him the moniker “Garmir Khatch” (Red Cross) of Dr. Atam.

In 1945, when Armenian repatriation from the diaspora commenced under the USSR, Manuelian’s father became president of the Armenian Repatriation Committee for three years. “My childhood memories are full of those days when our living room was transformed into a registration center for those who wanted to apply for visas to Armenia from Lebanon and Syria,” Manuelian recalls. “Families packed their belongings and would wait on the docks of the port of Beirut for the Russian ships to carry them to Batumi and then Armenia.” He explains how the program came to a halt after three years, as Armenia was not prepared in those days to handle an influx of 100,000 immigrants in such a short period of time.

Manuelian himself was born in Beirut in 1938. After graduating from a school set up by missionaries, he was admitted to AUB, where he met his wife, Iroula, who is of Greek Cypriot descent and also born in Lebanon.

Upon enrolling at the University, he sought help in order to reduce his parents’ financial burden of paying tuition, applying to the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon. He was able to successfully receive support from the Foundation throughout his academic career, until he graduated from the AUB Bechtel School of Engineering as a Civil Engineer.

“For my engineering training, I ended up working in a large engineering firm in London, UK,” he explains. “Hearing that Mr. Essayan, then the trustee of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, was to visit London, I contacted him, and he graciously accepted my request to meet. He invited me for a lovely lunch and had highly interesting subjects to discuss. After I told him that I was never asked to repay my tuition debts to the Foundation, he said, ‘You do not owe a penny to the Foundation. In the future, when you are in a position where you can help a needy Armenian student to achieve their goal of obtaining a decent education, it will be your turn to do so!’”

The kindness of the scholarship support Manuelian himself had received inspired him and his wife to give back to students currently studying at AUA. “My childhood emotional and sentimental attachment to the motherland has not waned over the years,” he asserts. “Quite the contrary, Iroula and I have visited Armenia twice already.” He shares how their first trip was during a dim time, just after the Spitak earthquake, while the second was during a more joyful period, in 2014, when they had the opportunity to participate in AUA’s commencement ceremony. “The second visit was very uplifting, as we were able to witness the immense progress Armenia had made since our earlier visit,” he shares, noting the advancement AUA has achieved in the three decades since.

Manuelian and his wife are now settled in the Bay Area, and both attribute the success of their respective careers to the education they received. Together, they are parents to a daughter who is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley and a son who is a graduate of the University of Santa Clara. They are also proud of their three grandchildren, who have accomplished much in their high school and undergraduate careers.

Looking to the future of AUA, they are hopeful for continued success that will help advance the Armenian nation.

YEREVAN, Armenia — This year, the American University of Armenia (AUA) celebrated Giving Tuesday, a global day of generosity observed annually, with a campaign dedicated to raising funds for tuition assistance for students from Artsakh so they may successfully complete their education unencumbered.

This initiative followed the magnanimous commitment by the Manoogian Simone Foundation to bridge the financial gap to fully cover the tuition obligation of 50 students from Artsakh currently enrolled in undergraduate and graduate degree programs at the University for the 2023-24 academic year, in light of the emergency situation created by the illegal occupation of Artsakh. The significant assistance pledged by the Foundation will ensure that these students and their families are relieved from the financial burden of tuition fees in order to continue their education uninterrupted and be able to focus on their studies and other life priorities.

Amounts raised from Giving Tuesday 2023 will address the financial struggle in which many affected families have been plunged following the forcible displacement of over 100,000 indigenous Armenians from the Republic of Artsakh in late September. Through the generosity of AUA’s global community of donors, the Giving Tuesday campaign concluded with a total of $46,500 pledged for the earmarked purpose.

Vice President of Development Gaiane Khachatrian comments, “We want our students from Artsakh to know that we care for them and are here to support them in their academic pursuits.”

The funds raised through the Giving Tuesday campaign are intended to support students from Artsakh with identified financial need. Eligible students who meet the established AUA financial aid criteria can formally apply for assistance, following the University’s financial aid application procedure and deadlines.
