SHAHUMIAN, Artsakh – In October 2013, the American University of Armenia (AUA)’s Garo Meghrigian Institute for Preventive Ophthalmology (Meghrigian Institute) of the AUA School of Public Health (AUA SPH) completed a project aimed at reducing the incidence of avoidable blindness and visual impairment among the socio-economically disadvantaged population in the Shahumian Region of Artsakh.

Meghrigian Institute of Preventive Ophthalmology of the AUA School of Public Health conducted a 4-day training on “Ophthalmic Diseases and Modern Diagnostic and Treatment Methods” among ophthalmologists of Gegharkunik and Tavush marzes between May 11-26, 2013.
AUA MPH Alumna and lead author Lilit Hovhannisyan, MD, MPH (2011) and her coauthors Anahit Demirchyan, MD, MPH (1999), Senior Research Specialist with the AUA School of Public Health and Varduhi Petrosyan, Associate Professor and Associate Dean of the School, reported in their article Estimated Prevalence and Predictors of Undernutrition among Children Aged 5-17 Months in Yerevan, Armenia that about one-fifth (20.5%) of the 5-17 month-old children in Yerevan were undernourished.
