YEREVAN, Armenia On September 25, 2019, the American University of Armenia (AUA) hosted the final conference of the Erasmus+ INCLUSION project at AUA’s Alex and Marie Manoogian Hall. The project was coordinated by the State Academy of Fine Arts of Armenia (SAFAA) and brought together various stakeholders and representatives of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) from the United Kingdom, Belgium, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), and Armenia. The Minister of Labor and Social Affairs of the Republic of Armenia (RA), Zaruhi Batoyan, RA Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport, Arevik Anapiosyan (M PSIA ’08), as well as representatives of the National Erasmus+ Office in Armenia were in attendance.

AUA Provost Dr. Randall Rhodes welcomed the participants and mentioned the major achievements of the INCLUSION project over the past three years. These include developing national level guidelines on the promotion of inclusion within high schools and HEIs, institutional level master plans and resources for inclusive teaching and learning, as well the organization of trainings for HEI faculty and staff and high school teachers.

“Central to this mission was researching and conducting needs assessments in our respective countries to ensure that the outcomes were aligned with local realities. We encountered many challenges and we identified many opportunities. […] It is now up to the participating institutions to work with the ministries and develop implementation plans that will truly affect change and ensure that every child, every student has access to quality education from kindergarten all the way to university,” Dr. Rhodes said.

During three panel discussions, the participants shared their understanding of inclusion, their applications within their respective nations, legislation, policies and procedures, the inclusive education toolkit, assistive teaching technologies, best practices in pedagogy, and quality assurance mechanisms. The consortium members highlighted the significant impact of the INCLUSION project in their communities and the tactics their institutions have implemented as a result of participation in this project.

YEREVAN, Armenia – The American University of Armenia (AUA) recently acquired special equipment to grow the capacity of the University’s Disability Support Services (DSS) and better support students with diverse learning needs. The equipment was obtained within the Erasmus+ INCLUSION Project devoted to the development and implementation of social dimension strategies in Armenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) through cross-regional peer-learning.

AUA’s Center for Student Success is now equipped with a number of notebooks and computers featuring assistive software programs (Sonocent, Kurzweil 3000, etc.) for inclusive education that magnify the screen for low-vision computer users; transfer digital and printed books into audio format; organize information and structure writing for papers and reports to clarify thinking in written form; and allow for better note taking of lectures and presentations. To complement the PCs, the University has received special ergonomic and large print keyboards designed to assist students with low vision and mobility challenges.

The Center also obtained a magnifying device that facilitates reading for students with visual impairments (Eye Pal Vision Smart Magnifier). This scanning and reading equipment connects to a monitor to display text in adjustable contrast, color combination, and brightness for easier reading. Another cutting-edge device, Snow 7 HD Plus, is a portable video magnifier with text-to-speech technology. Also available are the IRLEN colored overlays for reading that improve print clarity and stability, reduce strain and fatigue, eliminate headaches, improve comprehension, and allow students to read longer comfortably.

“The assistive technologies will further support AUA students’ learning and help them achieve superior academic performance. Provision of special accommodations both in and out of the classroom will empower our students to become more self-sustained learners,” remarked AUA Senior Counselor and Coordinator Yelena Sardaryan (MPH ‘13).

In culmination of the three-year INCLUSION project, a final conference will be held at AUA’s Alex and Marie Manoogian Hall on September 25, 2019. The consortium members, including EU partner country representatives from the United Kingdom, Belgium and Austria, and participants from the partner BiH Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) will present the outcomes of the project to the stakeholders and representatives of HEIs across Armenia.

YEREVAN, Armenia ‒ On April 29-30, 2019, the American University of Armenia (AUA) hosted a two-day training for 50 high school teachers of Armenia within the framework of the Erasmus+ Inclusion Project. The main objective of the training was to prepare teachers for inclusive education introducing them to specific examples, solutions, and methodology in learning and teaching practices. The training was designed to communicate the best practices to make academic classes more accessible to children with disabilities.

Following the welcoming remarks delivered by AUA Provost Dr. Randall Rhodes, the  Deputy Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Armenia (RA), Lusine Arakelyan, presented the national regulatory framework for inclusive education and the steps envisaged in the Government’s draft strategy.

The Executive Director of “UNISON” NGO Armen Alaverdyan, talked about disability terminology and ethics in communication with people with disabilities, by presenting a number of case scenarios for discussion.

Dr. Irshat Madyarov, chair of the AUA Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (MA TEFL) program, presented the Universal Learning Design, which sets forth the principles of curriculum development and application by educators of all grades and subject areas such that it provides all pupils with an equal opportunity to learn.

The session on the second day began with a reflection on awareness raising issues within international and local regulatory frameworks, presented by Hayk Mkrtchyan, expert in inclusive education practices. Subsequently, the new draft toolkit on inclusive learning and teaching was introduced to the audience by Mimi Zarookian, adjunct lecturer at AUA’s College of Humanities & Social Sciences (CHSS). The inclusion teams of AUA and State Academy of Fine Arts of Armenia (SAFAA) had developed a toolkit entailing methodological tools and other teaching resources. In the next phase, the priority is to test the toolkit’s utility for use in the classroom and receptivity by high school teachers. The session was followed by interactive case study discussions conducted by AUA and SAFAA staff on teaching practices frequently encountered by teachers.

The training concluded with the following outcome statement: while teachers value diversity and their classroom materials and curriculum reflect this value, pupils can develop essential skills that have been proven to counter prejudice and create understanding.

London, UK, March 19 – 23, a team from among Armenian partners in the Erasmus+ INCLUSION project traveled to the University of Roehampton to learn about inclusion in education. Apart from the American University of Armenia (AUA) representatives, the team from Armenia included representatives from the State Academy of Fine Arts of Armenia (ASAFA-the project coordinator), Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Armenia, Armenian National Students’ Association (ANSA), UNISON NGO from Armenia. The event was led by Bridget Middlemas, Jo Peat, and Clara Rubiano from the Learning and Teaching Enhancement Unit of the University of Roehampton.

The two university partners in the project –  AUA and  ASAFA – were tasked to learn about good practices of inclusive education from their British colleagues and create a draft master plan to improve inclusion specific to the strategic goals of their institutions.
“Although AUA has a lot to share with other Armenian universities and the public in terms of inclusive practices and access to education, this trip was thought-provoking in many ways. For one thing, consistent implementation of inclusive practices in the UK educational system started in the early 21st century only. They have achieved a lot within just a few years, and their model is a good example to explore and learn from. Also, I was impressed with the rigorous approach to faculty training and data-driven student support services at the University of Roehampton”, said Irshat Madyarov, a faculty member and chair of AUA’s MA TEFL program.

“The AUA provides access to higher education to people with disabilities through its facilities, yet the concept of inclusion is much greater than the physical building. Faculty, staff and students need to be much more aware of the varied definitions of disability, be more open and appreciative of diversity in all its forms, and learn how to accommodate the diverse educational needs of our students. In addition to providing targeted support to students with disabilities, we need to implement campus-wide awareness raising events, as well as  support inclusive education on the national level”, said Yelena Sardaryan,  AUA Counselor.

LEUVEN, Belgium – From November 9-10, a delegation from the American University of Armenia (AUA) participated in a two-day conference hosted by University College Leuven-Limburg (UCLL) in the scope of the Erasmus+ “Development and Implementation of Social Dimension Strategies in Armenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina through Cross-regional Peer Learning (INCLUSION)” project.

Delegations from the State Academy of Fine Arts of Armenia (ASAFA-the project coordinator), Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Armenia, Armenian National Students’ Association (ANSA), UNISON NGO from Armenia as well as delegations from University of Tuzla (UNTZ), University of Travnik (UNT), Federal Ministry of Education and Science from Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), Sarajevo Meeting of Culture BiH and EU partners from Roehampton University (UoR, UK), UCLL and World University Service (WUS, Austria) were also in attendance.

The conference aimed to share the art of planning institutional mechanisms for inclusive practice and social dimension strategies to foster access for disadvantaged groups. The central objectives were also to ensure inclusive curriculum development and inclusive assessment formats, leadership and clear responsibilities, and faculty training/induction courses.

“Although AUA promotes inclusive practices, there is room for improvement. This event was a turning point for the AUA team to get down to planning specific strategies and action priorities in this direction,” said Mr. Irshat Madyarov, associate professor and chair of AUA’s MA TEFL program.

To build supportive-inclusive environments at each partner country university (PCU), a special focus was placed on benchmarking analysis with emphasis on institutional context, institutional regulations and guidelines, quality assurance and quality enhancement, facilities, buildings and accommodation, learning and teaching and additional support and advice. Discussions on implications for writing the institutional and the national/regional guidelines, as well as exercises on stakeholders and social dimension strategies followed. It was particularly underlined to build on strengths and work on weaknesses as identified in the benchmarking exercises (different options depending on institutional and national context, stakeholder involvement, and other related factors).

Erasmus+ INCLUSION project aims to mobilize the HE capacity in Armenia and Bosnia & Herzegovina (BiH) in contributing to the implementation of the Social Dimension (SD) strategies through capitalizing on knowledge transfer.

YEREVAN, Armenia – From June 13 to 14, the American University of Armenia (AUA) hosted and participated in a two-day training within the framework of the Erasmus+ Inclusion Project.

The training began with welcoming remarks delivered by AUA Provost Dr. Randall Rhodes. In his remarks particularly underscored that promoting diversity at AUA is a prioritized principle of the University. “One of the main areas of interest is that we are trying to include students with multiple learning issues in order to introduce multiple learning strategies. We are trying to create the infrastructure and a network that will accommodate the needs of students who have physical as well as learning issues so they academically succeed at AUA.” he stated. The morning was then followed with a brief presentation of the activities carried out during the past months since the kick-off meeting of the project in December 2016. These included a country-specific literature review for Armenia and Bosnia & Herzegovina, as well as a review of students and staff surveys conducted earlier in the spring of 2017.

Unison NGO then presented the findings of the research of which was carried out by Armenian partners  including the general analysis of school curriculum and textbooks in Armenia. They reported that there were a limited number of materials and sources in the field. Nevertheless, they determined that there were a very small number of people with disabilities enrolled in Armenian higher education institutions (HEIs), an essential gender gap, students with financial difficulties that made it difficult to pay tuition fees, and inaccessibility to HEIs in terms of building conditions. The University of Roehampton (UoR) from the UK presented the overall results received from surveys conducted earlier in March at the Yerevan State Academy of Fine Arts (YSAFA)  and AUA among students and staff.

From these findings, project participants recommended offering opportunities for students with disabilities to visit HEIs prior to applying as a part of a supportive transition culture, ensuring training for admissions committees on disability issues. They also recommended that they introduce an access officer to liaise between applicants and students with disabilities and teaching staff to arrange necessary support service.

Students from AUA, YSAFA, and the University of Tuzla and the University of Travnik in Bosnia Herzegovina (BiH) raised the issues of inclusiveness at their institutions from a student perspective. They delivered a presentation on the current state of accessibility at their universities, issues that still need to be addressed, and recommendations regarding what should be done to further support underrepresented groups in Armenia and BiH. The need to address students with mental and physical disabilities was emphasized, as well as the need to clearly define the admission criteria for students from underrepresented groups.

UoR partners presented the practice of support to people with disabilities in the UK, after which workshop participants held small group discussions and shared their views regarding various questions. The questions addressed were about what steps can be taken to ensure students’ voices are being heard and incorporated into the process of developing a social dimension strategy at the university level and what can be done at each HEI to enhance data collection of students from underrepresented groups and their needs. Participants also discussed inclusive learning and teaching techniques, and how each HEI can better reach out to potential students from underrepresented groups.

The discussions were constructive and will result in the creation of institutional and national guidelines during next stage of implementation of the Inclusion project.

The cross-regional project consortium partners of the project are AUA, the Yerevan State Academy of Fine Arts (YSAFA), project coordinator, Unison NGO, the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs of RA (MLSA), and the Ministry of Education and Science of RA (MoES) as well as the University of Tuzla (UNTZ), University of Travnik (UNT), Sarajevo Meeting of Cultures (SMOC) from BiH. European partnering institutions include World University Service (WUS) and University of Graz (KFU) from Austria, UC Leuven-Limburg (UCLL) from Belgium.

YEREVAN, Armenia – From December 1-2, the American University of Armenia (AUA) was proud to host the kick-off meeting of the Erasmus+ Inclusion project, devoted to the development and implementation of social dimension (SD) strategies in Armenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina through cross-regional peer-learning. The goal of the Inclusion project is to address Armenia’s and BiH’s challenges related to the promotion of SD strategies outlined by the respective governments.

On December 1, the opening session began with greeting remarks wishes for successful completion of the project by Rector of the Yerevan Fine Arts Academy Aram Isabekian, President of AUA Armen Der Kiureghian, Ministry of Education and Science representative Sasoun Melikian, and Erasmus+ national office’s representative Ani Torosyan. Whereas attempts made thus far have been fragmented and only effective on a small scale, the project aims to enhance the capacity of higher education institutions (HEI) for implementing SD strategies, clearly define their distinctive roles in this field, and transfer the knowledge gained through capacity building of several stakeholders. Thus, within the framework of the project, the main objectives are capacity building of HEI staff and respective governing bodies, as well as developing a master plan and institutional support mechanisms for the design and implementation of SD strategies. Another central objective of the Inclusion project is to foster access to HEIs for persons from vulnerable/underrepresented groups.

With 14 partners from both public and private HEIs along with representatives from respective governing bodies, the Inclusion project will result in: national level guidelines on development/operationalization of SD strategies, institutional level master plans, resources for inclusive teaching, awareness-raising materials of high school pupils and teachers, and finally, trained staff and high school teachers.

All partners of the project and its coordinator, the Yerevan State Academy of Fine Arts (YSAFA), have agreed to take on specific portions of the implementation process to ensure its success. Partners include the World University Service (Austria), Karl Franzens University Graz (Austria), the University of Roehampton (United Kingdom), the University College Leuven-Limburg (Belgium), the University of Travnik (BiH), Sarajevo Meeting of Culture (BiH), University of Tuzla (BiH), the Armenian National Students’ Association, RA Ministry of Education and Science, RA Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, and others. As a partner, AUA has assumed responsibility for the dissemination and capacity building of human and physical resources sections of the project.

AUA is very pleased to play an integral role within the frameworks of the Inclusion project and looks forward to improving HEIs in Armenia and across the region, making them more accessible to various disadvantaged groups.
