Armen Sarkissian, RA Presidential Candidate, Visits AUA
YEREVAN, Armenia – On February 23, 2018, the American University of Armenia (AUA) hosted Armen Sarkissian, nominated recently to be the fourth president of the Republic of Armenia. Sarkissian was welcomed to the University by AUA President Dr. Armen Der Kiureghian, Provost Dr. Randall Rhodes, Vice President of Operations Ashot Ghazaryan, and Vice President of Finance Gevorg Goyunyan.
As the group toured the University, Sarkissian got acquainted with the history and facilities of AUA, visited the AGBU Papazian Library and Entrepreneurship and Product Innovation Center (EPIC) with its cutting-edge prototyping lab. EPIC Operations Manager Aram Keryan presented the idea behind this center and several students from current batches had the chance to introduce their startup ideas.
“AUA students should always appreciate the University’s efforts. The university functions as a family and you should never forget what it has done for you,” noted Sarkissian during his conversation with AUA students.
Sarkissian later held a conversation with the AUA community in Manoogian Hall, during which he emphasized the importance of education for Armenians worldwide. The attendees had the opportunity to ask Sarkissian questions on various topics such as the quality of education in rural areas, establishing diplomatic relations with Turkey, Sarkissian’s vision of Armenia in 25 years, and the role of the Diaspora in Armenia.
Sarkissian said that students at AUA receive excellent education and ended the meeting by turning the tables and posing a question to them: “What are you going to do if you become the president of the country?”
He said he hoped to receive an answer the next time he visits AUA.
