AUA President Emeritus Haroutune Armenian Receives Armenian American Medical Society’s Health and Heritage Award

Los Angeles, CA – The Armenian American Medical Society (AAMS) honored Dr. Haroutune Armenian with the AAMS Health and Heritage Award for his 50 years of devotion to and passion for public health research, education, and health care in Armenia and around the world. The award was presented to Dr. Armenian during the ceremony celebrating 30 years of AAMS’ commitment to promoting health services, education, and professional growth. The Minister of Health Dr. Armen Muradyan sent his special greetings stating: “Congratulations for the AAMS Health and Heritage Award. With your visionary and innovative thinking, you established and led health programs in the best educational institutions in the world and prepared a cadre of competent and knowledgeable health professionals, contributed to the establishment of health agencies in many countries and Diaspora. Your contribution to public health and medical sciences through the introduction of new research methods and numerous research projects is extremely important.”

Haroutune K. Armenian MD, MPH, DrPH, is a Professor in Residence at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, and Professor Emeritus at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Armenian is President Emeritus of the American University of Armenia and the founding Dean of the AUA School of Public Health. Dr. Armenian’s academic and development leadership has included program development at the Ministry of Health in Bahrain, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the American University of Beirut, and Director of the Master of Public Health Program at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. He is one of the earliest to apply epidemiologic methods to study the effects of the civil war at the population level during the 1980s in Lebanon, and the long-term effects of the 1988 earthquake in Armenia. He continues to lead the Turpanjian Rural Development Program and its Entrepreneurs in Medicine project.

The AUA School of Public Health works actively to improve population health and health services in Armenia and the region through interdisciplinary education and development of public health professionals to be leaders in public health, health services research and evaluation, and health care delivery and management.
