Dr. Randall Rhodes Appointed as AUA Provost

YEREVAN, Armenia – The American University of Armenia (AUA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Randall Rhodes as the new Provost, effective August 1, 2015. He will be replacing Dr. Donald Fuller, who will be stepping down as Interim Provost after one year of dedicated service to continue as Professor in Political Science and International Affairs.  

Dr. Rhodes holds a Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Chicago. His primary academic affiliation has been with Frostburg State University, in Frostburg, Maryland, where he has served as Associate Provost since 2012. From 2009-2012, he was Assistant Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and has been a faculty member at Frostburg since 1996. He now holds the rank of Full Professor.

Dr. Rhodes has won several awards, including: Faculty Achievement Award for Teaching, 2000; Faculty Achievement Award for Service, 2006; and Academic Excellence in Higher Education, sponsored by Hagerstown-Washington County Chamber of Commerce and USMH, 2009. His institutional service includes Chair of the Visual Arts Department, Chair of the University Undergraduate Curriculum Review Subcommittee, Chair of the  Evaluation Task Force, Coordinator of Women’s Studies, Chair of the President’s Advisory Council on Diversity, Chair of the Faculty Senate, Faculty Senator, Chair of Academic Affairs Committee of the Senate, and committees and task forces including the Teach Fluency Task Force, Undergraduate Education Initiative Steering Committee, Graduate Education Initiative Task Force, Marketing and Branding Task Force, Chair and member of Evaluation Committee, Chair and member of Promotion/Tenure/Sabbatical Review Committee, and Curriculum Committee.

Prior to his academic work at Frostburg, he taught at the State University College in Buffalo, NY, State University of New York in Geneseo, NY, Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY, and Nazareth College in Rochester, NY.    

He has also been significantly involved in museum and gallery administration, including: Memorial Art Gallery, University of Rochester, Rochester, NY; Genesee County Museum, Mumford, NY; Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois. He has also served as an Editorial Assistant for the compilation Handbook of the Collection. 

Dr. Rhodes has presented 22 academic papers at various conferences and proceedings and has published seven articles and catalogs on various aspects of art analysis. He has exhibited art works at 15 art exhibitions.

Dr. Rhodes has visited Armenia in the past and became very attracted to the culture and people. He is especially excited about the potential for further art education in Armenia.
