AUA Chess Club Holds Annual Chess Tournament

< 1 min read

YEREVAN, Armenia – On March 10, 2015 the American University of Armenia (AUA) Chess Club organized its annual chess tournament with faculty, staff, alumni, graduate, and undergraduate students participating in the competition.

AUA Provost Donald Fuller and Director of Admissions Arina Zohrabian visited the tournament to greet and encourage the twenty-two participants, who were also being cheered on by their friends in the audience.

Samvel Tadevosyan (ME Industrial Engineering and Systems Management, 2013 alumnus) received 3rd place, Ruben Gatrjyan (ME Industrial Engineering and Systems Management, 2nd year student) received 2nd place, and Sipan Muradyan (BS Computational Sciences) received 1st place. They were awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd place medals, respectively, as well as prizes. Additionally, all participants were given a small pomegranate magnet souvenir, including the top female player, Elina Shahumyan (Master’s in Public Health, 2011).

The tournament was conducted using the Swiss-system, which involves seven 10 minute rounds, with 5 seconds afforded per move. Rather than using process of elimination, the Swiss-system rewards players with points, then pairs them with others who have a similar score.

Judges included arbiters Vladimir Gharamyan and Vahan Dimaksyan from the Armenian Chess Federation, who provided not only equipment but also a fair judgment of the competition.
